Holy Orders

St. John Neumann

Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time.
There is only one Sacrament of Holy Orders, but there are three levels:

  1. Bishop. The first level is that which Christ Himself bestowed upon His Apostles – the episcopate.
  2. Priest. The second level is the priesthood. No bishop can minister to all of the faithful in his diocese, so priests act, in the words of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, as "co-workers of the bishops.”
  3. Deacon. The third level is the diaconate. Deacons assist priests and bishops and have a charism of service to the church.
